The Republic Square is the heart of Yerevan city and probably the site that many people visit first during their stay in Armenia. It is the central square which is large and intersected by the streets; Abovyan, Tigran Mets Avenue, Vazgen Sargsyan, Nalbandyan and Amiryan. It is also surrounded by beautiful and fine buildings such as National Art Gallery, government building and State Museum of Armenian History and Marriot Hotel where you can find a wonderful artificial fountain where a lot of tourists, local families and couple gather. The square was formerly called Lenin Square.
The square has a stone pattern in the center which gives you a tip of what traditional Armenian buildings look like. From the square can be found a huge clock embedded in the government building so that it is also a good place to wait for other people. The fountain starts dancing by music and light-up in the summer time from 9:30 to 11:00.
